- Make sure when buying your aisle runner that it has a nonslip surface to assure that it won’t move around once placed on the ground.
- If you want an unusual runner you could get a monogrammed aisle runner, which adds a unique impact.
- Using an aisle runner at a beach wedding is a disaster, sand and runners are not a good mix.
- If you like a basic runner, you can jazz it up inexpensively by scattering flower petals along the edges, but know that most churches don’t allow this.
- Whatever you do, do not buy the cheapest aisle runner possible, you don’t want your runner to rip to where it’s not even wide enough to walk down. Here’s a humorous video to give you an example. Cheap Aisle Runner Trouble

May 16, 2012Some of My Favorite Save-the-Dates. . .
May 9, 2012The earlier the save-the-date notification goes out, the less information you need to include. Generally, you include the name of the couple, the date of the wedding, and the general location-it’s more fun to leave the precise location a surprise so guests will learn something new when they receive the invitation. So the save-the-date card might say “Santa Barbara, California,” whereas California. Let people know if it’s a morning, afternoon, or evening celebration so they can plan accordingly. If you’re planning to do a wedding website or already have one, include the URL on the card. If it’s not ready yet, reserve the domain and alert guest to “watch for www.mindyandrobertwed.com.” Here are some of my favorite save-the-date ideas:
- Use photo booth shots of the two of you holding hand-lettered signs with the message “save the date.” mount them on the front of a fold-over note and put the details inside.
- For a beach wedding, write your names and the date in the sand, tracing a heart around them, and take a photograph. Have the photo printed on cards.
- Choose a graphic element that will be used on all of your wedding stationery and incorporate it on the save-the-date card. You could use a monogram, a palm tree, a flower, or an image that’s particular to you as a couple.
- Buy up postcards from your location (vintage ones are particularly great) and turn them into save-the-date cards. Flea markets are a great source.
- If you’re not using a lot of text, have the information printed on save-the-date magnets, Whimsical artwork or a photo can turn the save-the-date magnet into a keeper.
- The most creative way to do a save-the-date is to send out save-the-date cookies.

Making It Yours
April 30, 2012Many couples don’t realize how many ways there are to put their stamp on their meal. Look to these suggestions for inspiration. It will make planning your meal more fun, and your guests will delight in wedding edible favors that reflects your tastes, your history, and your background.
Before you do anything, stop to make a list of foods that you are passionate about. Even if you think you could never in a million years serve it at a wedding, write it down. Show the lsit to your caterer or catering manager. You’d be surprised at the ideas your edible favorites could spark in a creative food professional. If you love waffles, perhaps he’ll suggest adding a Belgian waffle station to dessert. If you adore cherries, you can serve a chicken or pork dish for the main course with a cherry sauce. Other places to look for inspiration:
- Is there a favorite family recipe? Ask if the chef is willing to make Grandma Helen’s carrot Souffle or Aunt Shula’s Persian rice.
- Explore your cultural history to find out if there’s a food traditionally served at wedding to bring good fortune to the marriage.
- Ask the chef to re-create a dish that’s part of your love story. Maybe it’s an appetizer you ate on your first date, or a side dish from the night you got engaged. Does the groom always order the same dish at your favorite restaurant? The chef may be willing to share the recipe for the occasion.
- Find a way to showcase your favorite food. From a ravioli station to a meat-carving table, the options are endless.
- Bring out your regional background via the food. For a New York groom, that could mean mini pastrami sandwiches at cocktail hour and black and white cookies on the dessert buffet. For a Texas bride, you could carve barbecued brisket onto small rolls at cocktail hour.
- If your a candy lover you could bring out your personality in a sweets table, again, the possibilities are endless.
Whenever you incorporate a personal element in your edible wedding favors, put a note on the menu, the table, or the buffet explaining the significance of the dish. Sharing the meaning with your guests will make them feel connected to you. If you’re serving an ethnic food that will be unfamiliar to some guests, write up a description of the food and the tradition behind it.
Gifts of Appreciation
April 20, 2012
Far in advance of the wedding, try to start thinking about the personal wedding favors you need to give. With so many other last-minute details, you really don’t want to be running around town five days before your wedding, frantically searching for eight matching necklaces-it’s one of those things that’s liable to slip off your radar that shouldn’t. You’ll also need to make time to wrap those gifts and write personal notes to go with them.
Besides your bridesmaids and groomsmen, you’ll want to give gifts to the ring bearer, flower girl, and any other members of your wedding party. It’s a thoughtful gesture to give a smaller gift to anyone who has a special role in the wedding or who helps by handing out wedding programs, lighting wedding candles, or manning the guest book.
Anyone who hosts an event in your honor, from a bachelor party to a day-after brunch, also merits a special gift. It’s a lovely gesture to thank your parents after the wedding, particularly if they are funding it-but even if they aren’t, they’re probably doing their fair share of work. (And even if they aren’t, you wouldn’t be where you are without them, so thank them!)
If you’re inviting children to the wedding, you’ll want to stock up on small gifts and activity packs.
Add to the list any vendors who have gone out of their way for you or to whom you feel especially grateful.
Brides and grooms have exchanged gifts for centuries, and though it’s not a necessity-the rings can certainly be considered the gift, especially if your finances have already been overtaxed by the wedding-it’s a sweet custom.
